The Season Question First

Thailand has two coasts with opposite weather calendars, and this single fact decides more itineraries than any budget or vibe.

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Phi Phi, Lanta, Krabi, Railay, Lipe) is best from November to April — dry, calm seas, postcard conditions. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rough seas and rain; some islands' ferries stop running entirely.
The Gulf coast (Samui, Tao, Phangan) is best from January to September, July and August among its most reliable months. Its off-season overlaps with the Andaman's peak, which is why seasoned travelers split their years between coasts.

The Andaman Side: Phuket, Phi Phi, Lanta, Krabi

Phuket gets dismissed by travelers who only know Patong's neon strip, but it's a full resort destination: world-class beaches on the west coast (Kata, Kamala), a lively old town with Sino-Portuguese shophouses, and the best diving day trips in the region. It's the only island with serious international flight connections, and it's where we'd send first-timers who want options without logistics.

Koh Phi Phi is where the photos come from: the Maya Bay viewpoint, the limestone cliffs, the bay of longtails. It's also crowded the way a music festival is crowded, especially January through March. Stay one or two nights, do the viewpoint hike at sunrise, and leave.

Krabi and Railay are Thailand's climbing and chill-water answer. Railay is a beach peninsula with no roads — arrive by boat, stay in simple bungalows, spend days on the limestone crags or floating in the still water. Ao Nang, the jumping-off town, has decent food and terrible karaoke, so book your stay on Railay itself.

Koh Lanta is the antidote: a long thin island of quiet beaches, family-run bungalows and night markets that shut down by ten. Rent a scooter, explore the national park at the south tip, and you'll see why long-stayers call it the last easy island.

The Gulf Side: Samui, Tao, Phangan

Koh Samui is the Gulf's Phuket — bigger resorts, good international connections, and food that rivals Bangkok's better neighborhoods. It lacks the Andaman's drama but gains year-round reliability; families and time-pressed travelers should weight it heavily.

Koh Tao is the dive school of Southeast Asia. Courses are cheap (a PADI open-water runs 11,000 to 13,000 baht, $300 to $360), the water is warm and clear, and the social scene orbits dive boats and sunset bars. Even non-divers should snorkel the nearby pinnacles — the fish life is the point of this island.

The Full-Moon Factor

Koh Phangan is more than the full-moon party it's famous for. Party crowds come for the moon; the rest of the year the island splits cleanly between the developed south and a jungly, waterfall-filled north with some of the best-value bungalows in Thailand. If you want parties some nights and silence others, this is the island.

Ferries vs Flights

The rule we give everyone: fly to the hub, ferry to the island. Bangkok and Phuket and Samui have airports; almost every other island is a boat ride from a port town.

Book ferries a day ahead in high season; show up with cash and a towel, and stay flexible — boat schedules are weather-dependent. The one flight worth taking is via Hat Yai to Koh Lipe if you're short on time — it saves a full day.

One more ferry tip: buy the return leg when you arrive. The boats fill fast in high season, and nothing ruins an island morning like a sold-out departure. Carry seasickness tablets too — the Gulf's high-speed ferries are faster and choppier than the Andaman's, and low-season swells are no joke on either coast.

What Your Money Buys

The islands' best secret is that a great trip doesn't need a big budget — it needs the right season. We've paid $12 for a beach bungalow in shoulder season on Koh Lanta and $80 for the same view in January. Same island, same sunset, different calendar.

Street food and local restaurants run 60 to 150 baht ($2 to $4) per meal almost everywhere; resorts on Phuket and Samui will charge five times that, so eat where the Thai staff eat. A decent private bungalow with air conditioning is 800 to 2,000 baht ($23 to $57) outside the highest weeks. Add a motorbike rental (200 to 300 baht a day), one island tour and a nicer dinner, and $50 a day on the Gulf or $65 on the Andaman covers most travelers comfortably.
